A Sweet Excursion to Society Bakery in Dallas

During our recent culinary excursion to Dallas, we visited one of the best and most popular bakeries in the city for a tasting of sweet delights. Society Bakery's flagship location is near Southern Methodist University on Lower Greenville Ave. Over the past decade, the bakery has built a loyal following of customers who go absolutely crazy for owner Roshi Mun's sweet confections. They've also expanded to include a second Dallas location and a San Antonio cupcake truck. Last year, I visited their mobile cupcake truck to sample some of their gourmet cupcakes, and I was immediately hooked. The cupcakes were moist and flavorful, and the icing had the perfect amount of sweetness to compliment the cupcakes without overpowering them.

I knew that the next time we visited Dallas, I had to pay an in-person visit to this amazing bakery, which has been recognized as having some of the best cupcakes in the entire country! My chance finally came this Summer...on my birthday to be exact. We arrived at Society Bakery on a hot Texas afternoon and immediately noticed two things: this bakery is very popular…and they offer a wide variety of baked goods in a large display case: whole decorated cakes, gourmet cupcakes, brownies, and cute decorated sugar cookies. They even offer baseball great Nolan Ryan's favorite cake: a beautifully decorated multi-layer Carrot Cake.

Roshi was working the busy front counter when we arrived, but she took time to chat with us and recommend some of her favorite goodies for us to try. There were so many creative options that it was hard to decide, so we were glad to have her input. While we visited the bakery, we sampled her inventive and tasty bread pudding whoopie pie. Although the bakery itself doesn’t offer seating, the adjoining deli has ample seating. We saw several customers do exactly what we did: order a sandwich or drink at the deli and then enjoy a little feast, complete with a sweet treat from Society Bakery. Roshi is a doll! Not only did she tell us a bit about how she started Society Bakery in 2003, she sent us on our way with a cute pink box full of birthday celebration goodies to enjoy later. From left to right and top to bottom, my birthday box included: a sweet-tart lemon bar, gluten-free brownie, frosted traditional brownie with pecans, white petite four, chocolate petite four, banana pudding cupcake, Key lime cupcake, and a decadent Brooklyn Blackout cupcake that came complete with a candle!
All of the items Roshi sent with us were completely fabulous…that decadent double fudge cupcake served as my birthday cake that afternoon! However, the real eye openers for me were the gluten-free brownie and the bread pudding whoopie pie. If you think gluten-free means no flavor, think again. It was dense and fudgy...no doubt one of the best brownies I’ve ever eaten! The bread pudding whoopie pie took one of our favorite desserts to a whole new level. We warmed our whoopie pie slightly so the filling became soft and melty. Feast your eyes on how gorgeous it was.

For my local San Antonio readers, you don't have to drive to Dallas to sample Society Bakery's menu of award-winning gourmet cupcakes and cookies. Consider this your great fortune! As I mentioned earlier, they also have a local food truck. The food truck offers several varieties of cupcakes and cookies each weekend at Boardwalk on Bulverde. They offer a rotating menu of tempting cupcake varieties, and all that I’ve sampled are fabulous! Make sure to visit the Society Bakery Cupcake Truck's Facebook page to Like them and get the most up-to-date information on their upcoming cupcake offerings and locations. Who knows...you may very well find me there conquering my cupcake cravings by enjoying one of their decadent Salted Caramel Cupcakes!
