Texas Frito Pie Burger...Featuring El Diablo Texas Chili Mustard #burgermonth #hotashell
By now, we’ve established that Summers here in Texas are crazy H-O-T! As a result, we tend to eat lots of light, refreshing main dish salads in an effort to beat the heat. That’s fine and good…but sometimes? Sometimes, you just want to sink your teeth into a juicy burger! Summer is the perfect time to celebrate #burgermonth. This fun celebration of all things burger is hosted by the lovely Kita of Girl Carnivore. Our burger-loving group is sharing 31 days of creative and tasty burgers this month. Each day, a different blogger is sharing their favorite burger creation. Today, I’m sharing my Texas Frito Pie Burger. These burgers are inspired by the menu at Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Austin. During a visit last year, I saw a similar burger on their menu. I didn’t order it and have been kicking myself ever since. So...I decided to create my version of a Frito pie-topped burger for #burgermonth.
Texas Frito Pie Burger
- 1 tbs. olive oil
- 3 hamburger buns
- 3 tbs. El Diablo Texas Chili mustard
- 15-ounce can Wolf brand chili (no beans)
- 1.5 cups Fritos corn chips
- 1.5 cups finely shredded co-jack cheese
- 1/3 cup finely chopped red onion
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- ¼ cup El Diablo Texas Chili mustard
- Diced green chiles to taste [NOTE: I used approx. half a 4-ounce can of mild chiles]
- ¼ cup finely chopped red onion
- 1 tbs. finely chopped parsley
- 1.5 tsp. sea salt
- A few grinds fresh black pepper
Directions:
Step 1: Combine the burger ingredients in a mixing bowl. Using pristinely clean hands, combine the ingredients until everything is evenly combined. Shape the mixture into 3 patties of equal size. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over med-high eat for 5 minutes. When the skillet is hot, add the burgers. Cook for 4 minutes per side – flipping once – until they are cooked med-well.
Step 2: While the burgers cook, toast the hamburger buns if desired. Heat the chili in a small saucepan. To assemble the burgers, spread each bottom bun with 1 tbs. of the El Diablo mustard. Next, add a cooked burger patty to each bun. Top each patty with 2-3 tbs. of the cooked chili. Top each burger with a generous handful of the Fritos, shredded cheese, and chopped onion. Add the top bun and serve.
These burgers are off-the-hook good! They’re just spicy enough to be interesting...and the crunchy Fritos are a nice texture contrast. After two bites, I personally found it easier to ditch the top bun and eat the burger open-faced with a fork. It’s pretty substantial…in both size and flavor. It’s basically a total meal in and of itself. If you’re a Frito pie fan, you’re going to go crazy for these burgers! I hope that you'll give it a try soon…it’s a perfect burger to serve for the upcoming football season. Any fan would LOVE to see this on the menu during the big game!!
